Hands Off or Hands On? Perspectives on Managing Nature

Event Details: Should we let wild nature run its course within a nature preserve, or should we intervene to guide it in directions we deem beneficial? There is a long and deeply rooted set of assumptions in the United States that the purpose of a national park or wilderness area is to preserve nature in a primeval state. And many of us—whether backpacking in Yosemite or enjoying one of our many local parks here in the Bay Area—continue to assume that this is what we are seeing.

Marilyn Yalom - Books of Death and Life

Join the Clayman Institute for Gender Research in remembering the late Marilyn Yalom, esteemed feminist author and historian. Yalom was a longtime Clayman Institute senior scholar and also served as its director from 1984-85. We will celebrate the release of Yalom’s final two books, Innocent Witnesses and A Matter of Death and Life, with remarks from special guests Irv Yalom, Stina Katchadourian, and Kate Wahl, in a conversation moderated by Clayman Institute director Adrian Daub.
